Passé par Charlotte ou encore New Orleans, James Southerland devrait être la dernière recrue de la franchise de l'Oregon pour le training camp.
A 24 ans, Southerland a signé un contrat non garanti d'une année. Non drafté à sa sortie de Syracuse en 2013, Southerland évolue au poste d'ailier et mesure 2m04. Plutôt bon shooteur, il s'est notamment illustré en D-League au sein des D-fenders où il a pu compilé environ 15 points de moyenne. Southerland avait deja effectué un workout avec Portland en 2013, mais le test ne s'était pas avéré concluant. Il pourra soulager la saison prochaine Nicolas Batum ou encore Wes Matthews au poste 3.
